Motorcycle Clubs
A motorcycle club is a social club created for people with a common interest in motorcycle riding. The nature of the club membership can be likened to that of other community activities such as specialist sporting clubs, Rotary and Lions clubs.
Membership of motorcycle clubs is legal in Australia, and most clubs are incorporated organisations or registered Australian companies. There are many diverse motorcycle clubs throughout South Australia which are affiliated with the United Motorcycle Council. These include well-known clubs, such as the Finks MC, Hell’s Angels MC, Gypsy Jokers MC, Rebels MC and Descendants MC, along with Christian clubs and military clubs.
Patch Clubs
A patch club is an organised club of dedicated motorcyclists who join together as members with a common identity represented by a “patch” – the recognisable brand of that particular club. Patch clubs exist for the purposes of companionship, education, rider training, and socialisation of motorcycle riders. Members often say they remain members of patch clubs for the sense of brotherhood and camaraderie the shared passion for motorcycles creates.
What is a Patch?
A club patch is a club emblem or coat of arms consisting of 3 identifiable pieces of branding: the top rocker, the bottom rocker and the centre insignia. Most patch clubs often include the letters “MC” on their vest, with Christian Motorcycle Clubs including the letters “CMC”. However for various reasons some patch clubs do not include MC on their vest.
What is a social club?
Social clubs do not wear the three piece back patch and are often dubbed “non-patch” clubs.
What is a nom or prospect?
“Nom” is short for nominee and is a term used to describe a prospective member of a club. A similar term used by some clubs is prospects. People who wish to become a member of a club nominate themselves for membership and undergo a trial period. Noms or prospects do not have full club membership and not all noms or prospects who apply for membership are successful.
People who have been noms or prospects in the past but have been unsuccessful have no further connection to that club when referring to membership.
